one small seed magazine

"One small seed" is a very inspirational magazine to me as a designer. The content available is mostly South African but with quite a few international trends to expose us to a global platform too. The content also includes a wide variety of topics which include architecture, design, fashion, culture and life style.

The front cover of "one small seed" has a glossy texture with images that always grab the attention of the viewer. They make use of attention grabbing color and contemporary cultures and issues as well as happenings. The cover is not cluttered with images and information, it only provides necessary information for the viewers.
The content is intellectual and always covers the trendiest topics that have to do with South African pop culture. The magazine inspires creative minds and gives a sense for them to follow their dreams and never give up.

I will now look at the layout of One small seed:

It looks to me that they use the intrnational typographic style and seeks harmony between typography and images. There is no clutter on the page making use of the space provided on the page. They use a strong typoraphic style as you can see by the way the typography is layed out, giving a sense for the viewer to read further and find more information on the topic. The image is very appealing as it is a different design of 3 heads of an animal, bring creativity through the magazine.

In this layout you can see that they used a different typographic style, the information is layed out in a circle also to attract the viewer to take a further look. The photograph is attention grabbing and funky which also draws the eye and the orange image in the middle of the writting is used as the heading of the article and placed in an informal position that wouldn't commonly be used.

This layout shows us that there is more f a structured feel but still has elements of design, the typography is now on the image as well as on the next page and the paragraphs stucture is in a box shape with sub-headings inbetween the paragraphs. The design is very appealing with the strong color(black) background on the right and a photograph on the left, utilizing white typography.

The market or niche is aimed at the open minded and the creative people of South Africa. Peole who are eager to learn from quality work especially the younger generation. This is a very inspirational magazine, with alot of interesting information as well as design aspects and it gives inspiration for designers.

The International Typographic Style in contemporary logos

ITS (International Typographic Style) is a widely used type form still used today. To demonstrate this I will go through 10 images that have the ITS principles and style. I will then choose 5 that are visually appealing and go into a more depth discussion on the overall visual aspects with regards to ITS principles and style.

Here are the logos I looked at:

After looking at the logos I chose 5 that were visually appealing. Now that I have chosen the 5, I will be discussing my choices.

In Fig.1 there is use of mathematical grid lines although they are not visible, there is use of sans-serif fonts, the capital “F” is shown as geometric shapes and, colour usage is very vibrant and attractive to the eye grabbing you’re attention and the black is a strong colour and helps the typography stand out.

In Fig.2 they make use of geometric lines as seen with the red rectangles and circles, they make use of sans-serif fonts, they make use a asymmetry, the colour schemes are used very well and stand out.

Fig.7's colour scheme is vibrant and attention grabbing, the black background is very strong which makes the rest of the typography stand out, the red is the main focal point as it is the first to grab your eye contact and again sans-serif fonts are being used.

Red is a very vibrant colour and to me personally grabs my attention, the lins are asymetrical but the use of typoraphic positioning and font, which is sans-serif, it still makes it look very professional.

In Fig.9 the wide aspect of this logo is colour, the way the shapes are arranged gives the logo a form of asymmetry, as seen the shapes are not all the same which gives the logo a sense of chaos, although the typography brings it all together and makes it look professional and the the letters are also positioned on each colour.

As you have noticed throughout this post that sans-serif fonts were commonly used this shows that the font is still used in this modern day. This is because the initiators of ITS believed that the font shows the spirit of a more progressive age and brings legibility and harmony to the information.
